Improper glove care can shorten the life of your PPE. It can also lead to dermatitis, decreased dexterity, loss of protective abilities, and odor. Glove care refers not only to laundering, but also proper storage, routine glove checks, and knowledge of materials and their particular strengths and weaknesses.
Because there are so many different work gloves on the market, experienced safety managers should be aware of what workers’ gloves are made of and how they will stand up to the applications they’re being used for. Common glove materials include nylon, spandex, leather, cotton, SuperFabric®, Kevlar®, High Performance Poly Ethylene (HPPE) and knit fibers. Each of these materials has a certain way it needs to be cared for, and oftentimes there is a blending of the materials, making proper care even more crucial.
How do you take care of gloves?
Proper storage: Store in clean, dry conditions, away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
Fit: make sure gloves fit correctly, as wearing the wrong size can reduce glove life
Cleaning + Care: Most gloves can be laundered at 30ºC and then air dried to avoid damage!
Option 1: Machine Wash: Wash on a regular cycle using cool water. Do not bleach.
Option 2: Hand Wash - Hand wash using mild semi-diluted cleaner and scrub until clean. Rinse thoroughly.
Drying: Hang to dry (indoors), do not tumble dry. Do not iron.
Companies who properly launder their gloves can increase lifespan by up to 300%.
Laundering removes harmful chemicals, perspiration, and everyday grit and grime that can weaken protective fibers and seams.
HOW TO: DONNING & DOFFING
Gloves are often designed with more than one layer of material. Using more than one layer allows us to provide a durable glove with additional properties such as cut and puncture resistance, thermal insulation, and water resistance.
Working with customers, we have found that the donning and doffing techniques outlined here can increase the durability and longevity of work gloves.
DONNING
As shown in Figure 1 and 2, make sure all fingers are aligned and seated when putting on your gloves. Use one or both of these techniques to seat your gloves.
DOFFING
As shown in Figure 3, slightly bend the fingers of the hand from which you want to remove the glove, and grip the fingertips with your other hand. This will keep the layers seated inside the glove.
