Cut protection Standards explained

uvex cut protection gloves are tested and certified to globally recognised EN standards, helping you select the right level of protection for the task.

EN 388:2016 – Mechanical risk protection

The current EN 388 standard measures resistance to:

  • Abrasion
  • Blade cut (coupe test)
  • Tear
  • Puncture
  • ISO 13997 straight-blade cut resistance (A–F levels)

The A–F rating indicates resistance to sharp-edge hazards commonly found in metal handling, glass, fabrication and industrial environments. Higher letters represent greater cut protection.

EN 388 (previous standard)

Earlier EN 388 markings used a numerical blade cut resistance scale (1–5) based solely on the coupe test.

While still seen on some products in market:

  • The old scale could be influenced by blade dulling on high-performance fibres
  • The A–F ISO 13997 test in EN 388:2016 provides a more accurate measure of modern cut-resistant materials

uvex gloves align with the latest testing methods to ensure reliable, real-world protection.
